High energy particles from γ-ray bursts
نویسنده
چکیده
A review is presented of the fireball model of γ-ray bursts (GRBs), and of the production in GRB fireballs of high energy protons and neutrinos. Constraints imposed on the model by recent afterglow observations, which support the association of GRB and ultra-high energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) sources, are discussed. Predictions of the GRB model for UHECR production, which can be tested with planned large area UHECR detectors and with planned high energy neutrino telescopes, are reviewed. High energy emissions from gamma-ray bursts
Gamma-ray bursts are the brightest transient sources of MeV γ-rays in the sky and are the leading candidate sources of the GZK cosmic rays. Physical conditions required to accelerate elementary particles to such high energies also, inevitably, lead to expected TeV energy γ-ray and neutrino emission from these sources. Although γ-rays of energy only up to 18 GeV have been detected from a few bur...
متن کاملLaboratory Laser Acceleration and High Energy Astrophysics: γ–ray Bursts and Cosmic Rays
Recent experimental progress in laser acceleration of charged particles (electrons) and its associated processes has shown that intense electromagnetic pulses can promptly accelerate charged particles to high energies and that their energy spectrum is quite hard. On the other hand some of the high energy astrophysical phenomena such as extremely high energy cosmic rays and energetic components ...
متن کاملHigh energy cosmic-rays from gamma-ray burst sources: A stronger case
The suggested association between the sources of γ-ray bursts (GRB’s) and the sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR’s) is based on two arguments: (i) The constraints that UHECR sources must satisfy to allow proton acceleration to > 1020 eV are similar to those inferred for GRB sources from γ-ray observations, and (ii) The average energy generation rate of UHECR’s is similar to the γ-r...
متن کاملNon-thermal radiation of cosmological γ-ray bursters
We use one-and-a-half dimensional particle-in-cell plasma simulations to study the interaction of a relativistic, strongly magnetized wind with an ambient medium. Such an interaction is a plausible mechanism which leads to generation of cosmological γ-ray bursts. We confirm the idea of Mészáros and Rees (1992) that an essential part (about 20%) of the energy that is lost by the wind in the proc...
متن کاملOn the Neutrino Flux from Gamma-Ray Bursts
Observations imply that gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are produced by the dissipation of the kinetic energy of a highly relativistic fireball. Photo-meson interactions of protons with γ-rays within the fireball dissipation region are expected to convert a significant fraction of fireball energy to > 10 eV neutrinos. We present an analysis of the internal shock model of GRBs, where production of synch...
